*heavy defeated sigh* I'm going to have to set up an SMTP server

@mom Will hopefully help with all the email problems? This is all much more than you probably bargained for when setting it all up.

@keirasoleore I hope so. I'll try to get to it this week.

y'know 20 years ago email was dead easy to set up, I would've done it without a second thought.

10 years ago it was still easy... but also massively choked with spam, so I never bothered.

nowadays spam is under much better control, but at the cost of everything being so insanely complicated I want nothing to do with it.

this is why we can't have nice things.

@mom Yes, I remember having to set up an SMTP server in a univ project and there were basic protocols but it was not very complicated. These days, I am too far away from the coding world to be of much help, but I can imagine that the robustness of the systems makes setups very complex--so many gotchas.

@mom I have no idea what that is, but I'm sending you some sympathy anyway.

@lauravivanco "simple mail transfer protocol".

(it was probably tempting fate to name it that.)

@mom I shudder to think what a complicated mail transfer protocol would do if this is what happens with a simple one!

@lauravivanco before SMTP it was literally a game of telephone - your computer would call another computer which would call another, etc, passing the mail along step by step until it got to the recipient.

you'd have to tell it in advance what route to follow when you addressed the letter. it was all kinda fun, if you were a nerd and nothing important depended on it working.

@mom Can you use sendgrid? I believe they have a free tier.

@cjewel oh I hadn't heard of that one. I'll look into it, thanks.
